"Stonefly Effects Handmade boutique guitar pedals from Montreal
Fuzz addict or fuzzaholic, does that tell you something ? Well yes, it is my illness. Stonefly Effects is a one man’s operation. A man who is -to use a comic picture- a little like a junkie so he decided to start to sell drugs - his own product actually - so he could fuel his burning passion. Ouch, that sounded sexual!!! My goal is to offer limited edition runs of vintage fuzz made with passion while seeking superior quality.
- from their facebook page
Name: Marc-Eric Gagnon
Company Name: StoneFly Effects
A quick introduction please, name, company, location:
My name's Marc-Eric & I run the small DIY effect pedal cie called StoneFly Effects wich is located near Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
What got you started making gear?
I'm a bit like a drug addict.
For me, guitar pedals are a passion & the next logical step was to start building them. It has been a dream since many years to start doing this.
What gear do you make?
I make Fuzz. Yeah, Fuzz is my life! But, I will probably build some others type of effects and I plan to build some amplifier in the future.
Where do you operate from?: I mainly operate from my house.
What about making gear do you like the most?
Hard to say. I like each step & I like to pay attention to details in each step. I like sourcing component, testing them into my circuits, promoting my stuff, choosing artist to hire. I build guitar pedals for myself at first & I know that if I love it, others will do. So, what I like the most is to put my dream pedals to reality but... I never stop dreaming! Another major thing I enjoy is having people loving my work.
Is this a hobby or full time operation?
StoneFly effects is a one man operation; so, it's a full time hobby. All about passion. I have a regular day job (stationary engineer). I work crazy hours; no less than 50/week. I also have 3 young kids.
Who inspires you/who do you look up to musically, IE what gear do you admire?
I always loved old 70's music; think The Doors, Pink Floyd, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath & especially Jimi Hendrix. I was probably the only one among my friends enjoying this kind of music when I was teenager. They were more into Punk Rock/Grunge which I was also. For me, the Led Zeppelin of my generation remain Rage Against the Machine. Getting older, Stoner Rock & Doom Metal were the natural evolution off all things I previously loved. So, getting obsessed with guitar gear I managed to discover along the years what were all the pedals behind all those great tones. I am a pedal addict & besides building them, I love to buy & try new ones.
What pisses you off/what do you like; about the boutique audio gear building industry?
I don't care when people are cloning old devices (this is what I do after all) but it pisses me off when I see someone cloning & selling an actual boutique builder design. Some seams well done and are looking great sometimes but for me, it don't feel right to do that.
What I like? I like people coming in with their takes on old vintage pedals or new design. For me guitar pedals are an art. No one do the same thing the same way. Sometimes people are bubbling about prices but, with all what is available on the market, they can choose between buying a poster or a painting!
Are you still in a band or play music and do you use your own gear?
I must admit I am an horrible musician; I may dream to be a rock star, I am far from beeing one. But, positive thing, with the years i'm getting better & better! Yeah, I use my own gear!
