Interview with MIA - Musical Instrument Amplification, Tampere FinlandWritten by Krach Werke
Welcome Teppo of MIA Amplification in Finland. Our latest guitar related builder spotlight. Teppo builds amps and guitar pedals while also servicing commercial and military communications equipment.
"I make effects and amplifiers because I love music and electronics. This is my way of expressing my self and create something new. Just like you when you are writing a new song. You are not motivated by money, but by passion. I'm not a custom builder. There are many custom builders who will make anything you want to get your money. I have these few models, and I try my very best to keep build and design quality as good as possible." - Teppo
MIA - Musical Instrument Amplification
A quick introduction please, name, company, location:
Teppo, MIA - Musical Instrument Amplification (or MIA for short), Tampere Finland.
What got you started making gear?
I've been into electronics since I was seven years old (over 25 years). So when I started playing music in a bands as a teenager, my band mates realize I can repair and modify their gear. And soon enough I found my self working in a music store as a service technician. MIA as a company has been around since 2007.
What gear do you make?
Small single ended tube amplifiers and effects pedals.
Where do you operate from?
At 2011 I moved from a big workshop to a much smaller one, and at the same time I scaled down my production leaving out basicly all custom and repair work. So at the moment I have a 110 square feet workroom in my apartment.
What about making gear do you like the most?
Research and development.
Is this a hobby or full time operation?
Neither. I have a two jobs. My other job is to service commercial and military radio communication equipment, and other is building guitar gear.
Who inspires you/who do you look up to musically, IE what gear do you admire?
Almost all music can inspire me. But I try not to look up to anyone. I like to think that we are all equals no matter if we have our own jet airplane, ferrrari or if we are just a few guys having fun making noise in a basement.
Gear I admire... Well tweed era fender amplifiers are my all time favourites.
What pisses you off/what do you like; about the boutique audio gear building industry?
Don't get me even started on what pisses me of... Let's just say blatant lying and marketing BS. And "gooping". I'm a after all a service technician by training. I do like few internet forums, both stompbox and amplifier related. And openly shared information and ideas between builders of different skills and areas.
Are you still in a band or play music and do you use your own gear?
No. I don't have time for that anymore. But I do play guitar and piano at least few times a week, just to keep my (not so great) skills up. But when I was in a band I did use my own gear, and so did my band mates.
Favourite Guitar Maker? I love inexpensive Squier guitars.
Favourite Guitar Effect? My first love: Boss Blues Driver BD-2.
Favourite Amp Maker? Fender.
Favourite Music Genre? I don't know... There's good and bad in every genre.
Favourite Band / Artist? If I can only say one, then it's Queen.
Favourite Guitarist? Brian May.
Favourite Instrument? Tenor saxophone.
Favourite Drink? Earl grey tea.
Favourite Place? Home.
Favourite Food? If you pay it, I like it.
