Interview:

Name: Enrico Preuß
Company Name: KMA Audio Machines

A quick introduction please, name, company, location:
My name is Enrico Preuß and I founded KMA Audio Machines in 2013/14 as a Berlin based small custom pedal manufacture and repair service. Besides our custom pedal section where we building pedals from scratch, we  recently released our first small series of pedals. We take existing and well known circuits and develop them further.

What got you started making gear?
I started to build my own pedals as I ran out of money to buy new stuff and got sick of standard and commercial products. With a B.Sc. and M.Sc. I am not scared to explore new things. So I started learning and understanding circuits to develop my own pedals.

What gear do you make?
We started out with custom pedals from scratch. As the inquiry of some custom pedals grew, we decided to release a series of pedals based on these custom pedals and our personal favorites. We do not stupidly clone pedals. Our aim is to optimize the circuits to fit the modern needs without destroying the character and tone of the pedals.

Where do you operate from?
We are operating from a small workshop at home in Berlin, Germany.

What about making gear do you like the most?
The freedom of doing what we want and try new things and exploring new possibilities. We really like to build pedals because of the impact in the musician's creativity. As a guitarplayer myself I know how much a new pedal can inspire you.

Is this a hobby or full time operation?
Actually it is in between. I spend a lot of time on developing our small pedal series and the custom pedals. Building stuff and so on. We just released our homepage and are looking for international dealers at the moment. So in future we eventually we make it to a full time operating company.

Who inspires you/who do you look up to musically, IE what gear do you admire?
I really love old fuzz boxes and unknown brands. Tonebenders, Buzz Arounds, Fox Tone Machine etc. , Vibes, Phasers and so on.

What pisses you off/what do you like; about the boutique audio gear building industry?
Blind cloning of pedals and telling you that it is the new shizzle sucks! The missing respect to other builders is a problem. Nevertheless I really love the big family of honest and friendly and helpful builders and the whole community!

Are you still in a band or play music and do you use your own gear?
Yeah I am playing at Amplified Backdoor Creatures, a german alternative/stoner/psych/blues band. Go check us out! I use my own pedals, because I love them, I never would build pedals I do not like. I am proud of every pedal and play them all!
