GHS expands their electric bass strings offering with the Round Core Bass Boomer set, available in sets of four, five or six.
The highlight of this new bass string set is the use of round inner cores instead of conventional hexagonal cores, which the company says improves note definition.
Most of the guitar strings today utilize hexagonal cores, including those that made for bass. Although old strings had round cores, hex cores are now preferred because of their consistency, longevity and reliability. The edges of hex cores allow the strings to be wound tightly, allowing for consistent sound across sets and better intonation.
Interestingly GHS still produced the Round Core Bass Boomers, despite the practicality of the hex core. The reason for replicating old technology is the same for the strings as it is for the instruments - players want to better replicate the vintage tone of bass guitars from the past.
Because the core of the strings are round, ensuring tight connection between the core and the wound can be challenging so these types of strings were generally wound by hand in the past. But technology has caught up, allowing manufacturers to mass produce round wound strings. Because of its round on round design, the strings are more dense and generally sustain better.
Here is what the company says about the new Round Core Bass Boomers, "Offering a full frequency sound with well-balanced, generous low mids and clear, soft high ends, the Round Core Bass Boomers provide a different harmonic content for all bass players. Their round core gives improved definition when played through an amp making them sing on the stage, in the studio or at rehearsal."
Before making them available to the public, the new GHS Round Core Bass Boomers were road tested by their artist endorsers, which included Aden Bubeck (Miranda Lambert's band) and Mark Damon (The Pretty Reckless).
